Supplementary Session Guiding Principles in Drafting Legal Aid Laws was conducted in the framework of the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice on April 15, 2015 in Doha, Qatar. The event was organized by Open Society Initiative, the International Legal Foundation, and UNODC. Director of the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision under the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine Andriy Vyshnevsky, Deputy Director Vitaliy Baev and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Qatar H.E. Mr. Yevhen Mykytenko took part in the Session within the delegation of Ukraine to the Congress.
During his presentation Mr. Vyshnevsky presented experience of establishment and development of legal aid system in Ukraine. He drew attention of the Congress participants to positive influence of the legal aid into reform of key elements of criminal justice system in Ukraine, in particular public prosecutor's office, police, judiciary, the Bar. ‘We must understand that implementation of national legal aid laws is a key element of the right to a fair trial’, - he noted.
